The Spy's Bride

Partly to please her autocratic grandmother, Eloise Bernal agrees to an arranged marriage with handsome, wealthy James Roth Meyer. Almost immediately after the wedding, James suggests an annulment, but after he mistakenly gets the idea that his new wife is carrying another man's child, he offers to remain her husband.

Before Eloise can tell him the truth about her virtue, he disappears, leaving her to discover that her new husband is also Captain James Nathanson, a British intelligence officer romantically obsessed with the Austrian countess who sold him out to the French. When the French allow Eloise and her family to visit her supposedly dying grandmother in Paris, James insists on accompanying them, hoping to meet up with his countess, but as Eloise and James travel from England to France, both find their marriage-in-name-only slowly turning into something more real than either of them expected.
